About

Creating gardens and landscapes to lift the spirit and ease the mind.

A ‘sense of place’ in keeping with the home and surrounding landscape, be it town or country, tailored to the owners dreams, aspirations and lifestyle.

Philip has designed and constructed gardens since the early 1980’s. After gaining a distinction in Horticulture at the University of Cumbria, Philip moved to London to work in The Royal Parks, being part of an award winning team for the 1986 Chelsea Flower Show, and was responsible for the reinstatement of formal avenues of trees within Hyde Park. Philip was then appointed Head Gardener at Westminster Abbey. Restoration and re-planting of ‘Little Cloister’ garden and other gardens within the Abbey precincts instilled a passion for historic gardens, subsequently working with The Museum of London, The Garden History Society, and the late John H Harvey on archaeological research in ‘College Garden’.

Moving to the West Country Philip started his own Design and Construction company, with commissions throughout the UK, Brittany and Spain. Designing and constructing classic and contemporary gardens, including an Italianate garden for The Duke of Somerset, and Moorish ‘Paradise’ gardens in Spain.

Alongside this from 2000 Philip opened ‘Hortus’ in Exeter, specialising in quality plants, Garden statuary, antique tools, interior design and styling.

From 2006 Philip was appointed Estate Manager on a sixty acre estate in Somerset, working alongside renowned Garden Designer Dan Pearson, establishing Wildflower meadows and new woodland, four years later Philip moved to Berkshire to work alongside Dan Pearson again, appointed as Head Gardener on the restoration and conservation of an Edwin Lutyens, Gertrude Jekyll garden ‘Folly Farm’.

This completed it was time to move back to the West Country, now living in Somerset once more, with a modest garden with views to the Mendips Philip now takes commissions for Town and Country gardens as well as offering a consultancy service nationwide.

Gardens take time to evolve, therefore Philip works closely with clients to ensure the process is smooth and enjoyable, an exciting journey in company with nature and the seasons. Using where possible local materials, and planting schemes which work in harmony with the surrounding countryside and indigenous flora.

Creating interest throughout the year is all important and an essential part of all quality gardens, ensuring the space created sits in its surroundings with ease.

Philip has developed over the years close relationships with quality plant suppliers and craftsman, ensuring high standards are achieved from the onset of the process, and continuing in the maintenance and management of the garden.

If you think Philip can assist you in your garden or wider landscape  please feel free to contact him.
